My Son 2021 is an experimental film in which a man returns to Scotland after receiving news that his son has gone missing. You end up with this jumbled up mess of a movie that goes from harrowing sincere drama to over-the-top. MY SON is another low-budget Christian movie with a really good ending.
My Son finds its cinematic footing in a committed steady realism and that creates a high-wire act of tension and suspense thats refreshingly clean and consistently effective. Then it could have been way better. If the filmmakers had at least explained the sinister situation the characters are facing.
Still this drama is enjoyable to watch. In the end My Son can be described as an average movie as it was a bit slow sometimes and didnt delve deeper into the bigger picture of the storyline. My Son starts off with interesting what-ifs and frame choices.
Although the fact that James McAvoy acted with no screenplay only reacting to the other actors lines is kind of interesting given his performance here My Son has little value in almost every way. That alone provides a natural suspense element but I dearly wished a bit more had been covered as. As an interesting concept My Son isnt a complete failure with a satisfying conclusion for those who tough it out but if anything it does show just how much work screenwriters put into making a completely inorganic construction - a plot - feel utterly fluid in a way that real life simply is not.
